To be honest it didnt go as expected. We didnt have enough time and some of the extras that we originally agreed to help were unable to come to the new college due to weather conditions on the roads. This set us back quite a bit as we had to organise a differnt view point so the few extras we did have looked like they were talking to other people whilst there was just empty spaces.
We were extremely organised as instead of going at 10 o clock to the new college I went at 9 o clock and started setting up everything. By abotu 10.30 we had everything ready.
We were unable to get all the shots we needed so we will have to go back to filming after the christmas holidays as in the 3 days time I will be flying out of the UK for the Christmas Holidays. We have however agreed a new date of filming with our actors when we arrive back and I have slightly edited the script so instead of the dialogue taking place inside at the bar, it will now take place outside whilst the characters are smoking.
Overall I found the process rather stressful as everything started to go wrong because of the weather, some of the actors couldnt show and then of course the camera ran out of battery after an hour.
We finished at about 1.40 because of this and didnt have enough time to do what we wanted.
But we have learnt that we will need to set aside more time for filming as originally we didnt think the process would take that long. Will post after the Christmas Holidays on the updates and process of Filming in January 2011.

Planning: Filming- shotlists
Here is the shotlist but reordered in the shots we can film at in one sitting. We want to film the conversation from one point of view then from the other rather than switching the camera over everytime there is a different line. This will hopefully make the scene seem more fluid. This is also the order we will be doing them in.
2,9
23,25,28,30
24,27,29,31,36,38
the other shots from 1-44 will have to be filmed by themselves as they are more unique than the others. eg. a close up or an extreme closeup. We will be doing these after the above shots.

Planning: Filming
We have confirmed with the actors in a meeting we held today that we will be filming on the 17th of December at 12.10 at the New college Worcester. I will be meeting my Media partner Rhiannon Valadini at 10' o'clock at the the BP garage opposite the new college to walk over with her. We will then spend the next two hours preparing the set of the cafe bar. There is a couple of sofas, a car area and a pool table that we will need to organise. We also will need to clean the bar area up a bit and place tape on the floor for where the tripod will sit for different shots.
We aim for out actors to arrive at about 12.00 and have hair and makeup done by about 12.10. This will be done my me on the actual set. We have also thought about a number of different shots we could do for experimentation when editing like of the pool table, light switches and doorhandles when a character opens the door to set the mood and demostrate continuity editing.
We have gathered all out props and costumes as well as organised out actors to bring their own clothes for the shoot tommorow!

Time Management: Updates
We are filming tommorow! My media partner and I are a bit worried though incase it all goes wrong. On top of that it has started snowign quite heavily and we are hoping that wont cause any problems! We have printed out all the storyboarding, shotlists and scripts in prepartation for tommorow. We have also charged the little camera. Hopefully the battery wont run out half way through filming.
Updates
Equipment:
Since the cameras had already been booked at my college I needed to find a different camera to use for my filming. Luckily I have my own camera that I tested and is compatible with the college computers for when I need to come back and edit my piece together. I also experimented with settings as you can put it on a black and white setting as well as accenting certain colours. This might be useful when filming, rather than doing so in editing the sequence or shots in a program like After effects.

Planning: Filming
We have thought of and printed out a helpful tip list to aid us in filming soon:
- filming more footage than we need. we should experiment with different shots.
- film the scene from a number of different viewpoints, angles and distances.
- keep thinking of shots that could help demonstrate continuity editing
- make sure the camera is fully charged or the tape is rewound back
- have at least 5 seconds at the start and the end of the shot. This will help us later when the editing process begins when we need to cut out parts.
- save the files in a number of different places incase something were to go wrong.

Organisation: Locations Updates
Locations:
We got written permission to film out piece on Friday, to use a cafe bar at the new college worcester from 9 o'clock to 1.30. Here is a picture I took of my friend holding the written permission from the head of care Rod Hall at the New College Worcester.
Planning: Storyboarding and Animatic
Animatic and Storyboard:
I encountered problems using Adobe Premiere Pro but managed to finally make the animatic for my film to see how long the sequence would last. I exported it onto Youtube (see video below)
I had to use one of my friends to act as the mysterious man as the actor I will use lives in Droitwich and couldnt make it down for the shoot in Worcester. We also had to improvise with props as the props I have ordered off amazon such as the tribly hats have not arrived. I didnt put an audio track to it as I didnt want the audio to be the main focus that the shots went around. The track will simply be used as background music. I found it on freeplaymusic.com under the 'moods' section. It reminded me of the music used in Film Noirs as it is quite dramatic.
Feedback from Animatic:
Most people so far have responded really well to the animatic and thought it “flowed really nicely.” Some said that it was confusing because of the lack of sound
“I think it would really help the story if there was some form of sound or any speech”, but were already beginning to pick up on some of the ideas. For example, people were picking up on the tension between the femme fatale and the main man.
Some people also said it was “slightly confusing” because the person playing the mysterious man wasn’t the person who is actually casted to play him which made it slightly confusing. However people like the idea of the mysterious man once it was explained. I think the audience perhaps found it confusing due to the fact that we were using Barthes’ enigma code to create questions for our audience which can sometimes be quite misleading.
We plan on getting more feed back once we have done some filming and we can show what we have done so far to people and get their responses.
Planning: Scripting
Scripting:
After my partner had looked at my script, we decided to add in some more lines and give the main male character a voice over exposition. Last night I watched various clips of film noir to get ideas for doing the exposition. I watched the opening of 'Murder my sweet' as the main character had very dramatic metaphors when describing his emotions: my mind felt like a plumbers handkerchief. I also was inspired by Greta Garbos line of - I never said, 'I want to be alone.' I only said, 'I want to be left alone.' There is all the difference. I then decided to alter some of then lines of my femme fetale to make her seem a little bit more 'evil'.
Here is the final script:
- Scene opens with fingers stroking a glass, you can hear 1940’s style jazz music playing in the background. You can hear background noise of multiple in quiet conversation.
-voiceover exposition of man’s voice- she was blonde/brunette/a redhead,(delete as appropriate) and legs for hours (should start when he starts looking at her)
- A woman is seated at the bar, by herself. At the other side of the bar there’s is a man, looking intently at the female. He seems to be attracted to her as he watches what she does and shows the male gaze of looking at her eyes and lips.
Nothing is said but both characters look back and forth to each other (shots 1-10) until the woman pulls out a packet of cigarettes (shot 11). The man responds by pulling out a lighter (shot 12). She walks out of the door outside to go smoke (shot 13), he follows. (shot 14)
Outside the bar on the street, you can still hear the music faintly playing in the background.
(shot 15)
Woman: (lights cigarette and avoids looking at the man and leans against the wall) (shot 16)
Man: (after lighting her cigarette) a thank you would be nice. (shot 17) (walks to the other side of her)
Exposition voiceover: Dames. Jeez. They rip your heart out without even breaking a sweat.
Woman: (exhales cigarette smoke) you’re trying too hard. (shot 18)
Man: I can tell you’re flattered.
Woman: (sarcastically) Yes. I’ve never been talked to by a guy at a bar ever in my whole god damn life before. (shot 19) Do you talk to every girl you see at a bar?
Man: Only the beautiful ones. I’m sorry dollface. I didn’t realise you were so… sensitive. (shot 20)
Woman: you don’t get any points for modesty (shot 21)
Man: humph. I didn’t bring up scoring. But either way, if id known it woulda’ made no difference. (shot 21)
Woman: (drops her cigarette on the floor and sighs. She opens the door and walks through) (shot 22)
Man: (he touches the wall she was leaning against and looks down shaking his head a bit in regret. He opens the door and goes through) (shot 22)
Exposition voiceover: My heart felt like it had been run over by a ten tonne truck,(pause) then reversed on.
Scene Cuts to the woman sitting by herself at the bar again. In the background we can see another man sitting by himself- he seems to be looking at the woman despite being slightly out of focus. (shot 23)
Man: Please, accept this humble offering (sets down drink to her) (shot 24)
Woman: (looks down at the glass almost in disgust but takes it in her hand).
Man: The names Hank. Hank Leonard. (He offers her hand to her in greeting but she doesn’t respond) Pleased to meet ya’. (shot 25 last part of dialogue only cue.)
Woman: (not looking at him- looking down at her drink- says this quite quickly after his dialogue) What do you do Hank?
Man: I have various means
Woman: cop, huh? You certainly look like the type.
Man: You could say that’s part of it. But, I aint short on money.
Woman: (turns to him as she hasn’t been facing him the whole time- has a bit of a smile) (shot 26) and what do you do with all your money?
Man: mostly investments. You know. Stocks and shares.….. and I own a little theatre…. (shot 27- last part of dialogue cue)
Woman: I wouldn’t have thought of you as lover of the arts
Man: Im like a cake, theres always another layer
Woman: (looked shocked/disgusted) And what if I don’t like sweet things?. (shot 28)
Man: (tries to shrug the comment off) A dame like you? Okay…. Well then a diamond, so many different faces and sides of one thing. (shot 29) That better? (shot 30)
Woman: I don’t buy a lot of bullshit about diamonds being a girls best friend.
Man: friends are never worth the trouble.
Woman: I pride myself on not being in trouble. Buy me another drink.
(says to the barman) vodka martini. With a twist. ( shot 31)
Camera pulls out (shot 32)
Barman: (setting the drink down) Enjoy.
Woman: (takes martini glass and sips it) (shot 33)
Man: So (pause), what do you do?
Woman: (sets down martini and takes out and olive on a cocktail stick) I play all day (eats olive sexily)
Man: (stroking her arm) and what about the night? (shot 37)
Woman: (puts cocktail stick back in glass) I try not to get bored. (shot 38 til end of dialogue.)
Man: (leans in to kiss the woman)
Woman: (turns away) I’m gonna smoke a cigarette (gets up and walks away)
Man: (balls up his fist) I’ll join you (also leaves)
Cuts away to the man we saw before. He puts on his trilby hat and gets up and walks away from his table. (shot 39)
Cuts to outside setting again. The woman walks out the door first and the man follows. She leans against the wall and takes out a cigarette. He is already ready with the lighter. He lights up her cigarette. She takes a drag and leans her head back watching the smoke as she exhales. She then grabs the man by his tie and kisses him. (shot 40) The man begins to caress her arms. He pulls away and offers him his hand. They walk together out of the frame.
Cuts away to the door and the man in the hat comes out. (shot 41) Puts his hands in his pockets. (shot 42) Looks down and then rubs out the cigarette under his foot. (shot 43) Then back up and walks away.
Music fades out.
I also researched some lines of other film noirs to inspire me whilst scripting. Greta Garbos line of : 'I want to be alone'. She told a friend that : 'I never said I wanted to be alone, I only said I wanted to be let alone'. This gave me great ideas for the lines for the femme fetale.

Organisation: Actors and Casting
Organisation and Actors:
At the weekend I took shots of my main Actors Lizzie Hughes and Matthew Roach. I also took photos for my rough photostoryboard to use in the day of filming as well as the animatic so we can see if we need more shots to make up time or cut out any unneccasary detail. It will also give me a rough idea of what my sequence will look like and how long each shot will last for. We also ran through the scripting to make sure the actors were comfortable with the lines and did a run through just in my friends kitchen with a make-shift bar, without all the exact props and costumes. When doing the head shots I tried to do it in film noir dramatic lighting to practice for filming so I could tell exactly how much light I would need as well what angle my actors would have to face towards the light. It was really helpful in seeing what I will need to do when filming.

Planning: Storyboarding
Storyboarding:
We will be creating a storyboard/ animatic once we have the light to create a film noir style effect.
We might have to buy a large portable light . After reading through information about film noirs, and reading other peoples experiences when recreating a film noir effect, a 500 watt lamp is said to be best. I found one on Amazon for about 15 pounds.

Planning: Casting Update
Casting:
The two people who originally agree to act in our piece have now dropped out, so we need to find someone new to do some acting. We were also going to make our ANIMATIC and PHOTO STORYBOARD using them but now we are a bit stuck. We also thought we need background actors in the bar scene.

Organisation: Props/Costumes
Props and Costumes:
Today after college, I will be going out the town to go look for some costumes and props that we still need like a revolver which we can hopefully get from a toy store, and props like Martini glasses and mens suits. we made an excel spreadsheet to help us out- this is the first one and we still need to update it, mostly of which he have hand wrote.
all these images above are the ideas for props/costumes and makeup we will be trying to use in our final piece.

Casting:
My partner and I also asked around for people who didnt mind being in our film. After lots of people who couldn't do it we have two people who are willing to do a bit of acting. Hopefully they will be free when we need to film it.
We have made a plan to meet up with our actors and discuss work tommorow afternoon to go over the script and finalise all the details like the list of props and costumes. We will also need to adress where our film can be filmed and the healthy and safety issues regarding the place.

Time Management
In order to meet the deadlines and finish all the tasks I have devised a work schedule with my partner so we have even amounts of work. In todays lesson we split up the tasks between us and we agreed to do a bit of work each day so during lesson time, we have more time to do the other tasks. I have set up a Calendar using Google Calendars that includes the deadlines, lessons and other events involving the planning and production of my opening sequence.
I have chosen to do the shotlist, the storyboard of photographs which we could make into an animatic and the final scripting. All the rough drafts of work such as the first storyboard and script, my partner and I will do during classtime. We aim to do all the rough notes or drafts in class so we can go away and perfect the work in our own time.

Brief Synopsis
I aim to set up and equilibrium which will be hinted that it will soon be broken. I would like to create enigmatic codes so the audience will become more intrigued into watching the rest of the film.
I would like to introduce an unnamed femme fetale character that will bring on the downfall of the main hero who will interact with the female chraracter in the opening title/scene.
I would also like to create another sense of mystery by showing a dangerous looking man in the background of some of the shots to make the audience ask questions like: who is the man? why is he looking at the 'couple'? and what relationship does he have with either of the characters.
The proposed setting is a bar and the street outside a bar at night. This will give me a chance to experiment with dramatic and unnatural night time and create a sense of mystery as the night setting will heighten the drama and enhance the feeling that something bad might happen, as most crimes occur at night.
I would like the scene to end with the dangerous looking man becoming more a main character as he will be given more screen time as well as following after the other two characters. This should hopefully connote to the audience the themes of violence from the dangerous looking man and romance between the hero and femme fetale.

Genre Research Summary
1.What do the titles tend to look like?
The titles are often white top contrast against the dark shadows, intergrated into the opening scene. The font tends to be bold and in capitals and fade on and off on top of the scene that opens.
2. What kind of music/ or other non diegetic sounds are used?
Film Noirs tend to use music that isoften extremely dramatic. In the opening sequence to DOA the music creates tension and a sense of mystery and engages the audience as the scene starts with loud non diegetic music that fits the titles.
3. What types of character do we see in the opening sequence? How are their chracters established through technical features?

4. What kinds of mise-en-scene dominate? What are typical features of setting, lighting, props?
Settings often include Urban or city landscapes or Police stations as a common theme in Film Noirs is crime. Props were also associated with the same theme, such as guns and wepons. Since most Film Noirs were set in the 1940’s and the 1950’s, alot of the props were from those eras. Costumes, props such as cars and objects were all from the 1940’s and 1950’s. A lighting technique called ‘Chiaroscuro’ (basically means light and dark) was used to which heightened the drama of Film Noirs. The use of shadows and silhouettes to outline characters made things look more sinister.
5. What narrative codes are employed and how?
Enigma codes were a key aspect of Film Noirs to intrigue the audience and create a sense of mystery and suspense. The audience are meant to ask questions that they expect to be answered, thus making them more interested in watching the film. A binary opposition is also created of hero vs. villain or male vs. female.
6. Is there a particular form of cinematography or editing that is specific to the genre you are working in?
Generally there is a slow pace of editing in Film Noirs between shots. A key aspect of cinematography is the lighting which I have previously explained. The lighting is dramatic, creating crisp black lines and shadows, that make the scene all the more mysterious.

It’s very glamourous and focuses on the fine details of a. You get a strong sense of what’s wrong and right (binary opposition). There always seems to be a bad guy which the hero has to catch, often to save a female character in distress. I like it but I’m not familiar with it and would like to know more.

I cant personally identify with many of the aspects shown in this genre as thats not what i have experienced so far in my life however i recognise many of the general themes from modern books and films i have seen. I like it, i think it has captured the essence of film noir and of that time.

Response to Film Noir mood board: I really liked the mood board because it really did show the mood of the genre you are looking at. It showed all the key conventions and things that you might be interested in using for you piece.
How can this feedback help you when doing your final piece?
I will definitely take into account that some people actually arent always very individual and like some of the mainstream movies like the musical, Mamma Mia. That will affect my film as I would include some conventions of other films and more modern conventions of film so that my audience would be able to relate to it more. My final piece will have to include key conventions of film noir as well as modern conventions to relate to a more modern audience to that of the 1940's and 1950's. Although the themes of film noir are still relatable to today, I will perhaps need to have a more modern version of a film noir, similar to the film Sin City that uses orignal Film Noir conventions but is aimed at a more modern audience.

it makes me feel like I'm in a different time, it also has a very sinister feel to it; murder, violence. I cant personally identify with many of the aspects shown in this genre as thats not what i have experienced so far in my life however i recognise many of the general themes from modern books and films i have seen. I like it, i think it has captured the essence of film noir and of that time.
